As more and more Web services integrate into core processing systems, the reliability and performance of these Web services becomes a primary goal for businesses. Companies must ensure that the Web services deployed are as sound as possible, because they serve as the backend driver for business processes such as customer-facing applications, CRMs, SCMs, etc. Outages for such critical components could cost companies large losses due to the business disruption.
This paper is the first in a series of three papers. It outlines the technical challenges in evolving Web services at the early stages of the SDLC, specifically from a testing perspective, and describes the main activities involved in addressing these challenges. The second paper will build on top of this paper by describing the challenges at the team level and how to establish an infrastructure to drive an efficient collaboration process and mitigate software risk with a visible quality process. The third paper in the series will explain how these challenges evolve at the organizational scale, and the environment that needs to be established for business risk mitigation within a more evolved SOA.
